Health crisis in Kenya as health workers down their tools

Health sector in Kenya is facing crisis as nurses and clinical officers at public hospitals went on strike amid rising coronavirus cases in the country.

The striking workers announced they will strike last week due to lack of both protective gear and health insurance.

So far 30 doctors, 10 clinical officers and 26 nurses have died of coronavirus.

The Kenyan National Union of Nurses (KNUN) said their 23,000 members will not resume working until their grievances are met by the government.

Among their demands, is compensation of families of 23 nurses who succumbed to Covid-19.

The death of Dr. Stephen Mogusu further worsened the situation as his last words to doctors were “Save your lives.”

At the time of his death Dr Mogusu had not been paid his salary for five months, had no insurance and his family is left with no compensation.
